Sandi Port Errant Alumni Volunteer Program

Give back to Mather by working directly with students, enhancing their career development.    This program honors the memory of Sandi Port Errant, a Mather alumnus from the Class of 1967, who was actively involved in this scholarship fund and volunteerism.

Sandi and her sister Roberta attended Mather High School in the 1960’s, when the school first opened. Four years apart, they spanned eight years in which to make their mark on the school. Roberta, with her grace and elegant presence, was a part of the first four year graduating class. By the time Sandi arrived, Mather was in full swing, with its choirs, its sports team, and a more experienced and expanded faculty in place.

“Being a mentor to our scholarship recipient has been a very rewarding experience. I believe my student values knowing that I am there for her, that she can count one me for advice or to lend an ear when she's feeling stressed. And I know I value my relationship with her and what I am learning from her!”

- Deanna Stern Zednik
Class of 1965

Sandi participated in numerous activities, and many of us recall her charismatic personality, her beautiful smile and her commitment, even as a young person, to the concept of volunteerism as a vehicle for making this a better world. In recent years, she helped to develop a vision in which Mather alumni would work with the current Mather student body to help them expand their post secondary education options.

Sandi died tragically in October, 2004. Her sister, Roberta Port Washlow, has funded this volunteer program in loving memory, and in honor of her sister’s commitment to this scholarship fund and alumni volunteer program.

The volunteer program enables alumni to work directly with students. You do not have to live or work in the Chicago metropolitan area to become a volunteer. You can volunteer for one hour, one day, or as much as you choose. In today’s technological world many volunteer opportunities can be accomplished virtually. Click a link below to determine which ones fit your skills and interests.

New volunteer opportunity!  Teachers request classroom speakers throughout the year.  To be prepared for these requests, we are putting together an Alumni Speaker's Directory.  Alumni from all professions are invited to join this program.  All interested alumni are asked to complete a registration form.  Please download the Speaker Directory Registration Form, fill it out and email it back to us.  Once a teacher requests a speaker on a particular topic we will connect that teacher to a speaker.

E-College Mentor

Motivate and empower students once they have graduated from high school and enter college. Being in contact with someone who has “been there” “done that” will help the student succeed. You can be that someone the student can email when he or she is trying to choose college courses or deciding what type of job to get during the summer months. You can be a support and a good listener as they vent about their college experiences.
