Sandi participated in numerous activities, and many of us recall her charismatic personality, her beautiful smile and her commitment, even as a young person, to the concept of volunteerism as a vehicle for making this a better world. In recent years, she helped to develop a vision in which Mather alumni would work with the current Mather student body to help them expand their post secondary education options.
Sandi died tragically in October, 2004. Her sister, Roberta Port Washlow, has funded this volunteer program in loving memory, and in honor of her sister’s commitment to this scholarship fund and alumni volunteer program.

The volunteer program enables alumni to work directly with students. You do not have to live or work in the Chicago metropolitan area to become a volunteer.
You can volunteer for one hour, one day,
or as much as you choose. In today’s technological world many volunteer opportunities can be accomplished virtually. Click a link below to determine which ones fit your skills and interests.
New volunteer opportunity!
Teachers request classroom speakers
throughout the year. To be prepared
for these requests, we are putting
together an Alumni Speaker's Directory.
Alumni from all professions are invited to
join this program. All interested
alumni are asked to complete a
registration form. Please
download
the Speaker Directory Registration Form, fill it out and email it back to
us. Once a teacher requests a
speaker on a particular topic we will
connect that teacher to a speaker.

E-College Mentor
Motivate and empower students once they have graduated from
high school and enter college. Being in contact with someone who
has “been there” “done that” will help the student succeed. You can be
that someone the student can email when
he or she is trying to choose
college courses or deciding what type of job to get during the summer months.
You can be a support and a good
listener as they vent about
their college experiences.
Career Fair
Discovering how someone chose their profession, what skills they needed to hone, what courses
they took, and what it is really like to work in that profession is valuable information. Armed with this information
a student will be able to make career choices as well as practice their interview skills.
Meet with the students at the
Career Fair at the school where
you will learn about their
interests. You can
continue the conversations after
via e-mail or in person.
Mather Science Fair Judge
Share your knowledge and excitement about science with the Mather student
body. Your knowledge of science or history will provide students with the opportunity to
receive feedback about their projects. This feedback helps each student understand how their
project is viewed through the eyes of another. You will listen to student presentations,
ask questions, test your knowledge, and give meaningful critiques of the students’ work.
Mather History Fair Judge
Share your knowledge and excitement about history with the Mather student
body. Your knowledge of science or history will provide students with the opportunity to
receive feedback about their projects. This feedback helps each student understand how their
project is viewed through the eyes of another. You will listen to student presentations,
ask questions, test your knowledge, and give meaningful critiques of the students’ work.
Scholarship Evaluation Committee
Evaluating scholarship applications not only helps the committee but you will share the excitement of
the students who have been awarded scholarships. Each year students apply for the Mather Alumni scholarships and we
need volunteers to read the applications, work with other committee members, and assist in
choosing those students who will be awarded the scholarships.
Field Trip Chaperone
Throughout the year
chaperones are needed for
classroom field trips and/or
alumni sponsored group job
shadowing activities. A
chaperone joins the students on
the bus to and from the site and
follows the students as they
learn. Field trips have
included trips to Chicago
museums, theater and visits to
hospitals where students
discover the many professions in
the medical field.
Job Shadowing
Provide a student with the opportunity to see a profession first hand. It’s one thing to
read and hear about a profession. It’s another to actually see what goes on. You will be paired with one
or two Mather students who will
follow you around for one day as
you perform the duties of your
chosen career.
Classroom Speakers
Share your expertise, ideas and
professions with Mather students
as a classroom speaker. We are
always looking for alumni who
would like to be included in our
Speaker's Directory.
Informational Interviewer
Discovering how someone chose their profession, what skills they needed to hone, what courses
they took, and what it is really like to work in that profession is valuable information. Armed with this information
a student will be able to make career choices as well as practice their interview skills. Meet with a student either
via e-mail or in person at the school to help that student make important decisions about
his/her future.
Career Roundtable “Breakfast”
Sharing your career stories and expertise with Mather students will spark an interest in their
future. Many students have not been exposed to the vast number of careers available to them.
Just think of the world of possibilities you will open for them. As a Career Roundtable volunteer you
will meet with a small group of students for breakfast, share how you chose your career and watch their
eyes open up wide.
Organize an Event
There is no end to the outreach and networking possible among alumni.
Informal events, such as sports outings, barbeques, and the like, can be organized in many cities where
Mather alumni live or at schools that recent alumni attend. Our Alumni Directory
can help you identify potential invitees. If you wish to have information
about your event posted on the website, please send an email to alumni@matheralumni.org.
